Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS)

 

The Capital District will hold an Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills on Friday and Saturday, January 4th and 5th 2019 at Davidsonville Family Recreation Center (DFRC).

IOLS course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and Varsity Coach Position-Specific Training, and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors.

Specifically, this hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a boy-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.

Time and Location: IOLS will start on Friday, 4 Jan 2019 at 1700 (5:00 PM) and conclude on Saturday, 5 Jan 2019 at 1800 (6:00 PM). The training will be held at the Scout Hut at DFRC, located at 3789 Queen Anne Bridge Rd, Davidsonville, MD 21035.

What to Bring: We will be camping outside, so pack accordingly. You will be able to borrow a tent, but you should bring:

    • Rain gear
    • Water bottle filled with potable water
    • Flashlight
    • Matches and fire starters
    • Sun protection
    • Compass (Can be borrowed if you do not have one)
    • Clothing for the season (warm-weather or cold-weather)
    • Backpack w/ rain cover (optional)
    • Sleeping bag, or two or three blankets
    • Sleeping pad
