Merit Badge Counselors:

The term of a merit badge counselor for the Arrowhead District starts June 1 of one year through May 31 of the following year.  Your Youth Protection Training must be valid for your complete merit badge counselor term.

Current Counselors:

Keeping your contact information is up to date is critical to allow scouts and the co-deans of merit badges to contact you.  To update your contact information or if you want to make any changes to the list of badges you are registered to teach you need do the following steps.

1.  Complete a BSA Merit Badge Counselor application and include any changes (adds or drops).  You can find a copy of the form online using the link in the resource links section of this page.

2.  Make sure your youth protection training is up to date and will not expire before your current term as a merit badge counselor.  If it isn’t up to date or will expire prior to the end of your term complete the BSA online Youth Protection Training and then print out a copy of your completion certificate.

3.  If you are signing up to counsel a shooting sport merit badge you will need to supply a copy of your training certificate for each of the shooting sports you have listed on your BSA Merit Badge Counselor application.

4.  Turn the paperwork into the co-deans of merit badges at a district meeting or monthly round table.

5.  Wait for an acknowledgement from the co-deans of merit badges that your application has been accepted.

Adults Interested in Becoming a Counselor:

So what do you need to do to register as a merit badge counselor for the Arrowhead District?  It is not that difficult.  Here are the steps.

1.  Complete a BSA Adult application for the position code of “42” which is a merit badge counselor.

2.  Complete the BSA online Youth Protection Training and print out a copy of your completion certificate.

3.  Complete a BSA Merit Badge Counselor application listing the badges you are interested teaching and read the form to familiarize yourself with the guidelines on what is expected of a counselor.  You can find a copy of the form online using the link in the resource links section of this page.

4.  If you are signing up to counsel a shooting sport merit badge you will need to supply a copy of your training certificate for each of the shooting sports you have listed on your BSA Merit Badge Counselor application.

5.  Turn the paperwork into the co-deans of merit badges at a district meeting or monthly round table.

6.  Wait for an acknowledgement from the co-deans of merit badges that your application has been accepted.

Renewals Process:

In late April or early May you will receive a letter by either email or US Mail letting you know it is time to renew and requesting you inform the co-deans of merit badges if you are planning to renew or stop counseling merit badges.  The letter will contain the instructions you will need to follow to complete the annual renewal.  You will be expected to reply to the co-deans of merit badges with renewal reply before May 21 to ensure the list is updated by June 1st.  Those renewal forms received after May 20 will be processed later in June.

Below is a sample of a renewal letter that has been used in the past.  Future letters will be similar in nature and will reflect the current process to be followed at the time of renewal.

 

Hello,

Thank you for serving s a MBC over the last year for the Arrowhead District.  It is the time of year to renewal your agreement to be a MBC for the BAC Arrowhead District.  The term of a MBC expires June 1 of each year.  You should expect a request for renewal to take place annually.  You will need to reply prior to May the 20th.  If you do not reply prior to this date you will be removed from the active Merit Badge Counselor list for our district.

So as a MBC what do you need to do to renewal yourself?

1.  Use the URL http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf to download and complete the MBC application.  Please reread the form to familiarize yourself with the guidelines.  You do not need to list the MBs you are currently a counselor for, but if you are dropping any MBs please note them on the application.

If you not planning on continuing as a MBC fill in the top of the form and simply check that box on the application stating you are no longer wish to serve as a counselor and continue with step 4.

2.  Make sure your youth protection training is up to date and will not expire during your term as a merit badge counselor.  If it isn’t up to date you can take the BSA online Youth Protection Training.  Print out a copy of your completion certificate.

3.  If you are a MBC for one of the shooting sports you need to be a certified instructor and you will need to include a copy of your certification. 

4.  Once you have completed the necessary forms send those forms via email to arrowheaddean@gmail.com.  If you received this note via U.S. Mail return the forms to the address below:

5.  Wait for an acknowledgement from the co-deans of merit badges that your application has been accepted.
