Notification of Increase to Council and Unit Accident and Sickness Insurance‏


The Baltimore Area Council is announcing that the Accident and Sickness Insurance fee that is paid at charter renewal time for each registered youth and adult leaders will increase from $2.00 per person to $4.00 per person and will begin with all unit charter renewals that have a December 31, 2014 expiration date.

In addition, beginning in January 2015, all new members who join throughout the year will pay a prorated Accident and Sickness fee of $0.34 per month.  For example, if a member joins in September and their unit expires in December, they will pay a 4 month prorated fee of $1.36 in addition to their prorated membership and Boys’ Life fees.

This entire fee pays the cost of the Council's Accident and Sickness Insurance policy. This policy is designed to help meet the costs of medical care for Scouts and Scout Leaders participating in Scouting activities. This accident and sickness insurance is provided for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and adult volunteer leaders registered in the council, and covers them for accidents and sickness while participating in any official Scouting activity.

The cost of the Council’s Accident and Sickness Insurance policy has continued to increase over the past two years, but because of the National Council’s increases with membership fees and its General Liability Insurance Policy the Baltimore Area Council did not want to add another increase and absorbed the cost for the 2014 program year.  Beginning in 2015, the Baltimore Area Council is unable to continue to absorb the increase of the Accident and Sickness Insurance policy.

Change in Unit Registration Status and Membership Reporting

A change in the national reporting of membership data will begin effective January 1, 2015. Starting then, a unit that has not reregistered by its expiration date will be considered “separated” and immediately dropped from BSA’s membership reporting. There will no longer be a “lapse period” for units that do not reregister on time; we will no longer use the term “lapsed” for a unit that has not renewed. This will also change the way we report membership totals. Currently, a lapsed unit’s membership continues to be counted for 60 days in council membership totals. 

 The new definition will begin with units that have an effective date of January 1, 2015. This means that units with a December 31, 2014 expiration date will be included. Volunteers will retain access to MyScouting, MyScouting tools, Internet Rechartering and Internet Advancement for 30 days after their unit has expired and become separated.   A separated unit will have 12 months to reregister as a separated/reregistered unit. Once a separated unit has been reregistered, the unit will be included on membership reports starting in the business month that the recharter was posted.



What does this mean?

This means that any unit that does not have a completed and submitted charter before January 1, 2015 for the following year will immediately expire and all membership will be lost.  To avoid any loss in membership the Dulaney District/BAC will be supplying recharter materials 1-2 months earlier than usual to give unit leaders the ability to complete the online process and submittal before the deadline.  Please look for more information at Roundtable and on the Dulaney District Website.

Japan 2015 World Scout Jamboree

Join the BSA Contingent Heading to the 2015 World Jamboree in Japan.

2015 World Scout Jamboree, hosted by the Scout Association of Japan. The 23rd World Scout Jamboree will take place from July 28 - August 8, 2015 in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The purpose of the event is to bring together scouts and scouters to share international friendship and adventure for personal growth and development. Between thirty and forty thousand participants are expected from more than 100 countries. It's going to be a world-class event - one you can be a part of if you can start planning now.

Eligible participants must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America as a Boy Scout or Venturer and have been born between July 27, 1997 and July 27, 2001. These age ranges are set by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and are NOT negotionable

International Service Team $2000.00

  • Update on Tolerance, Inclusion & Membership Standards
    The Executive Board of the Baltimore Area Council Boy Scouts of America at it's recent meeting held on November 19, 2013 affirmed the council policies on inclusion and tolerance and approved publishing of these to this website. The Executive Board also affirmed the membership standards of the National Council of Boy Scouts of America and have approved the republishing of the National support documents related to the memebership standards.
